Lok Sabha polls | TMC announces candidates for all 42 seats in West Bengal

Some of the shocks on the Trinamool Congress candidate list were former cricket players Yusuf Pathan from Berhampore and Kirti Azad from the Lok Sabha seats in Bardhaman Durgapur. Veteran lawmakers like Kalyan Banerjee from Serampore, Saugata Roy from the Dum Dum Lok Sabha constituency, and Sudip Banerjee from Kolkata were all kept on by the party.

With its announcement of candidates for each of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal on Sunday, the Trinamool Congress put an end to any rumors of sharing seats with the Congress party prior to the election.

Certain surprises were included on the Trinamool Congress candidate list, including former cricket players Yusuf Pathan from Berhampore and Kirti Azad from the Bardhaman Durgapur Lok Sabha seat. Veteran lawmakers like Kalyan Banerjee from Serampore, Saugata Roy from the Dum Dum Lok Sabha constituency, and Sudip Banerjee from Kolkata were all kept on by the party.

Though Nushrat Jahan was dropped from the Basirhat constituency, which includes Sandeshkhali, the party has fielded well-known Bengali actors June Maliah from Medinipur and Rachana Banerjee from Hooghly. Shatrughan Sinha, the victor of the Asansol by-election in 2021, has been nominated for the position.

Additionally, the Trinamool Congress has shown confidence in fresh faces like Tamluk youth leader Debangshu Bhattacharya and Malda North IPS officer Prasun Banerjje. Barely a few days have passed since Mr. Banerjee’s resignation. The Trinamool Congress has renominated Krishnanagar’s Mahua Moitra and Barasat’s Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar as female MPs. In place of Mimi Chakraborty, Trinamool youth leader Sayani Ghosh has been fielded from Jadavpur, and Abhishek Banerjee will run for renomination from Diamond Harbour.

Two BJP MLAs from north Bengal’s Raiganj and south Bengal’s Mukut Mani Adhikari, who initially won on BJP tickets in 2021 before defecting to Trinamool, have been handed Lok Sabha seats.

In the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee presented the party’s Lok Sabha candidates during the Jon Gorjan Sabha (People’s Roar Rally). The chairwoman of the Trinamool Congress declared, “We will accommodate those who could not get tickets in Assembly elections or with party posts.” According to Ms. Banerjee, the Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav and the Trinamool Congress are in talks about the latter party’s candidate for Uttar Pradesh. The Trinamool Congress will also run candidates in Assam and Meghalaya.

In response to Trinamool’s “unilateral announcements” of candidates for the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress leadership also took action.

“The Indian National Congress has made it clear time and time again that it wants to share seats in West Bengal with the TMC in a decent arrangement. The Indian National Congress has consistently argued that rather than being finalized by decree, such an accord must be reached through discussions. Congressman Jairam Ramesh stated, “The Indian National Congress has always wanted the INDIA group to fight the BJP together.”Speaking to the assembly at Brigade Parade grounds, Ms. Banerjee brought up the subject of the State being denied finances in order to lay out her platform for the impending Lok Sabha elections.
