The government should be barred from appointing officials, according to a Supreme Court petition on the appointment of the CEC.

On Monday, a petition challenging the Chief Election Commissioner’s appointment was submitted to the Supreme Court (CEC). The petitioner claimed that the appointment of CECs and other election commissioners by the government ought to be prohibited. There are currently two open positions at the Election Commission for Election Commissioners (ECs). To fill these, the prime minister’s commission may convene on March 13 or 14.

Right now, the only remaining member of the Election Commission is CEC Rajeev Kumar. Election commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey retired in February. On March 8th, Arun Goyal abruptly resigned, and on March 9th, President Draupadi Murmu accepted his resignation.
