New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (EAM) is said to have strongly objected to Germany’s statement regarding Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest, bringing it up with the German ambassador.
George Enzweiler, the German Embassy’s Deputy Head of Mission, paid the ministry a visit on Saturday. Germany’s comment was interpreted by the MEA as “blatant interference” in India’s domestic affairs, according to ANI.
Enzweiler was observed departing the Ministry of External Affairs establishment located in the South Block of the capital city.
In relation to a money laundering investigation connected to the Delhi liquor policy case, Arvind Kejriwal was taken into custody on Thursday night.
In response to the detention, the German Foreign Ministry spokesman stated that Arvind Kejriwal should be entitled to the presumption of innocence since it is a fundamental component of the rule of law.
“We are aware that India is a democratic nation. We anticipate that in this instance, the norms pertaining to the judiciary’s independence and fundamental democratic values would also be implemented. Mr. Kejriwal has the same rights as anyone else facing charges, including the unrestricted use of all available legal channels during his trial. He must be entitled to the presumption of innocence, which is a fundamental component of the rule of law, according to a spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry.
Arvind Kejriwal was sent to ED prison until March 28 on Friday. Kejriwal was arrested after he disregarded nine summonses from the Enforcement Directorate.
The Delhi chief minister will not step down from his position and would lead the government from behind bars, according to Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP. On moral grounds, however, the Bharatiya Janata Party has urged that Kejriwal resign immediately.
The first chief minister to be arrested is Kejriwal. Prior to their arrest, other leaders had resigned from their positions.
